Day of Service
Today is a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. We are called to serve today to build communities and to strengthen individuals. You can serve others by spending time with your families, helping a family in your neighborhood, or by offering assistance to strangers.
I remember my parents used to take us to the MLK Jr. exhibit at the Center for the Arts to read about his life and to participate in talks about how we could make a difference in our world. Recently, my younger brothers invited me to serve food at a soup kitchen. What a rewarding experience!
Whatever you do, do something! Every act of service counts. Visit http://www.mlkday.gov/ for more ideas of how to Serve in your communities!
Please remember the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. We are also called to serve communities outside of our own. The people of Haiti need all the help they can get right now. Text HAITI to 90999 and $10 will be donated to Red Cross-Haiti Relief and charged to your phone bill. Or visit http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/ for a list of other credible organizations.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy"
Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963
"Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: - We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" Martin Luther King Jr., Speech at Civil Rights March on Washington, August 28, 1963
